Ed Johnson & Novo Tempo"New Day Rising"About the project: In the early part of 2020, Novo Tempo was hard at work on a new recording project. “New Day Rising” came out of a need for a return of love and hope to change the toxic negativity and darkness that has been so prevalent over the past few years. But then the Covid-19 pandemic hit and everything was suddenly shut down. Around mid-May, we decided to focus on finishing tracks for “New Day Rising,” working from our home studios. Dealing with the effects of the pandemic and recent election has made us feel even more inspired to share this song with the public and give everyone’s spirits a lift.
Personnel: Ed Johnson: Acoustic Guitar and Vocal; Kristen Strom: Tenor sax, vocal; John Worley: Trumpet; Scott Sorkin: Electric Guitar; Jason Lewis: Drums. |

Personnel: Kimberlye Gold, Lead vocal & rhythm guitar; Rich Armstrong, trumpet, flugelhorn, bass, percussion, background vocals; and Dave Shul, lead guitar. |
Mascabeza con Jones"Connor Norte"About the project: “Connor Norte, dedicated to my 1-yr old son Connor Morehead, is my newest composition, a unique blend of an Afro-Peruvian 12/8 festejo meets jazz. There will be elements of one-drop reggae by the drum wizardry of Josh Jones and the Peruvian Cajon magic of world renowned Juan Medrano Cotito (of Susana Baca). The upright bass (Geoff Brennan) will round out the jazz side with myself (Patrick Morehead) on funky fender Rhodes to give it 70’s vibe. Chloe Scott will be joining us on flute. This song will be a one of a kind and I hope that Music In Place can help get this project of Lima/Oakland out into the community of music lovers."

Bells Atlas"Belly"About the project: Bells Atlas is a psychedelic R&B band from Oakland, California. Their thoughtful, textured sound has consistently answered the call for something new and refreshing. Band members Sandra Lawson-Ndu, Douglas Stuart, Geneva Harrison, Derek Barber, and Steven Blum carve through musical genres to create their own stylings—and the result is a buoyant, soulful sound that is unique yet accessible. The band’s latest offering the mystic digs further into their soulful aesthetic to explore both sound and storytelling. It began with the musicians stumbling upon a new, more production-oriented process for songwriting that included sampling grainy phone recordings. The spontaneity and even humour that came from that process elevates Bells Atlas’ already distinct approach to music, resulting in the mystic’s raw, cosmic sound that is mirrored in its lyrics.

Rob Reich & Circus Bella All-Star Band"Levitating Gravity"About the project: “Levitating Gravity” is a tune written to accompany a slackrope circus act. The melody floats and jumps playfully over the wobbly rhythm, inspired by the carefree disregard for the laws of physics shown by circus performers.
Personnel: Rob Reich, keyboards; Ian Carey, trumpet; Kasey Knudsen, alto saxophone; Alisa Rose, violin; Jonathan Seiberlich, tuba; Michael Pinkham, drums; and featuring slackrope artist Esther de Monteflores of Circus Bella. |
Brian Fitzgerald Trio"Adam's Song"About the project: "Adam's Song" is an original tune composed by bassist Bob Wider, and named for his son Adam that has a nice back story. While studying Music with Ray Brown at Cabrillo College, Adam wanted to bring in an original piece to his theory class to analyze. He enlisted his father's help and in the time-honored jazz tradition, Bob reharmonized and 'rebopped' a classic jazz standard, shaping it into a hard swinging, modern vehicle, well suited for adventurous post-bop improvisation.
Personnel: Robert Wider, bass; Keith Wieland, drums; Brian Fitzgerald, guitar. |
Zēlos QuartetSingelée: Mvmt 1 from Quartet for SaxophonesAbout the project: The Zēlos Quartet proudly presents the opening movement from Jean-Baptiste Singelée's pioneering work, "Premier Quatour"(1857). Written at the request of the instrument's inventor, Adolphe Sax wanted to display the warm and expressive qualities of his new family of instruments to composers and manufacturers alike. Singelee delivered a piece which would kickstart a completely new chamber ensemble medium and Zēlos is happy to perform its lively first movement.
Personnel: David Cortez, Soprano; Robin Lacey, Alto; Julian Salazar, Tenor; Shoko Nagami, Baritone. |
Quartet SAn Francisco"Ives Been Thinking About You"About the project: Quartet San Francisco's nostalgic homage to the city by the bay. A Barbary Coast bluegrass blowout, with strains of familiar folk melodies, new then, which still continue to echo through the city today. Inspired by Charles Ives' American Symphony, connecting contemporary times with the people's music of days long gone, but not forgotten.
Personnel: Jeremy Cohen, violin; Joseph Christianson, violin; Chad Kaltinger, viola; Andrés Vera, cello. |
Steffen Kuehn"Ruff Times"About the project: "I wrote this piece in memory of my dear friend Jonathan Ruff, who passed away in early October 2020. The same week I went on a writing sabbatical in Lake Tahoe for two weeks and this composition came to me three days after Jon’s funeral and I know that this piece contains Jon’s spirit and love for music."
Personnel: Steffen Kuehn, trumpet/flugelhorn/programming; JD Walter, vocals and lyrics; Stefan Polzer , bass; Taylor Eigsti, piano/keyboard; Antonio Sanchez, drums. |
John Stowell"Nanti Glo"About the project: "For our MIP project, I thought if would be fun to use a two guitar/bass/drums format for one of my original tunes. Rick Vandivier, Dan Robbins and Jason Lewis are all good friends and stellar musicians. They interpreted my tune 'Nanti Glo' beautifully. I’m happy that we could collaborate virtually and look forward to playing with Rick, Dan and Jason live again soon."
Personnel: John Stowell, guitar; Rick Vandivier, guitar; Dan Robbins, bass; Jason Lewis, drums. |
Jerry Simas & Jeffrey AnderleCouperin: "Les Gôuts-rénuis"About the project: "The bass clarinet is relative late-comer among traditional musical instruments and with its rich and sonorous tone color, it is rewarding to explore Baroque cello music which creates many opportunities to expand our solo repertoire. These lovely dance suites by Couperin really capture the humor, grace, and vocal qualities capable with the bass clarinet."
Personnel: Jerry Simas, bass clarinet; Jeffrey Anderle, bass clarinet. |
