Music in Place Original videos
At the outset of the covid-19 pandemic, professional musicians who spent their entire careers creating live music were faced with the reality of a new paradigm: their gigs were basically gone, with little chance for a return to “normal” anytime soon. But… musicians NEED TO WORK. This is where Music In Place came in.
We have provided free technical training, best practices, and financial support to assist musicians with migrating their work to the digital media. And we continue to offer grants to a wide array of performers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond to help make ends meet.
If you are a Bay Area professional musician looking to collaborate or would like to submit a project proposal to Music In Place, please click HERE.

Richard B. Evans – MacIntyre Cottage
MacIntyre Cottage, A Gaelic Sojourn, is a musical snapshot from an imagined evening of convivial music in a thatched cottage on the wild
Atlantic coast of Donegal. A fiddler and small band of musicians accompany the festivities with a medley – a lively slip jig, a haunting slow air, and an even livelier reel. Dancers, up on your feet!
This video production was generously underwritten by Bernard Lauper.

Heather Normandale — Raven
This spooky, sultry, and sumptuous new song from Heather Normandale is entitled "Raven." Be prepared to journey with Heather and her band on a dark and mysterious trip... Will you find a cooler new song this week? Quoth the raven, "Nevermore." With Heather Normandale (vocals, banjo, video production and editing), Paul Sounder (upright bass), Maren Metke (vocals), Marlon Aldana (cajon, shakers, güiro), and Justin Ancheta (mandolin and guitar). |
Kristen Strom/Scott Sorkin Quintet — Thankful
"Thankful" is dedicated to "all of those loved ones we were not able to see during the pandemic. And for those who stayed at home for their health — we are thankful for you!" With Kristen Strom, saxophone; Scott Sorkin, guitar; Jason Lewis, drums; Ruth Davies, bass; Tammy Hall, piano. |
LoCura – Los Besos
LoCura is an ensemble that weaves a tapestry of migratory beats together with lyrical poetry evoking the cultural kaleidoscope of their hometown of Oakland. For the past 15 years, they have crafted their own distinct musical identity: "Califas Canto," a remix of rhythms and vocal expressions from Spain to California. Composed by LoCura, adapted from a poem by Adrian Arias. With Kata Miletich, vocals; Bob Sanders, electric guitar; Melissa Cruz, drums; Joaquin Zamudio, bass; Danny Cao, trumpet; and Luna Fuentes Vaccaro, percussion and backup vocals. Live painting by Adrian Arias. Additional video by Mimi Cezanne Stoll. |
Mads Tolling & The Mads Men — Dizziness of Freedom
From composer Mads Tolling: "The song title comes from one of Kierkegaard’s quotes. Known as the godfather of existentialism, he makes the point that anxiety is the dizziness of freedom. Kierkegaard believed the most important aspect of living is to make hard, sometimes uncomfortable choices and not just mindlessly follow the herd." Lyrics by Darian Gray & Søren Kierkegaard. With Mads Tolling, violin; Colin Hogan, piano; Dan Parenti, bass; Eric Garland, drums; and Darian Gray, vocal. |
Arjun Verma — Afternoon Raag
Arjun Verma presents an original rendition of a sweet afternoon raag (melody) on sitar, playing the movements known as jor and jhala, which progress from a medium tempo to a very fast tempo. Improvising in the characteristic semi-structured style of North Indian classical music, Arjun takes a fresh and sensitive approach to this traditional melody, performed in a beautiful outdoor setting. |
The New Acoustic Collective feat. Wyatt Rice — Old Gray Coat
The New Acoustic Collective is a Bay Area professional jazz and bluegrass fusion ensemble influenced heavily by the “dawg” music of David Grisman and SpaceGrass music of Tony Rice. In this project, The New Acoustic Collective brings the late flat-picking virtuoso Tony Rice’s composition entitled "Old Gray Coat” to life, featuring Tony’s brother Wyatt Rice. With Jason Keiser (guitar), Alonso Sanchez (double bass), David Boyden (fiddle), and Nathaniel Grohmann (cello), with special guest Wyatt Rice (guitar). |
Members of Cosa Nostra Strings — "Pifanos" (Corman)
From composer Tony Corman: "Our Pifanos is based on a scale that predominates in the music of the flute/drum bands in areas of the north of Brazil. The main motif was one I heard frequently when playing with a Brazilian group in a funky basement bar in downtown Berkeley in the 90s. As for the rest of it, I just want to take you, the listener, for a ride through some exotic landscapes and set you down back home, better off for the journey!" With Ilana Thomas, violin; Shaina Evoniuk, violin; Keith Lawrence, viola; Lewis Patzner, cello. |
Michael Hernandez: Fantasia for Flute No. 4 (Telemann)
From saxophonist Michael Hernandez: "Due to the 2020 shelter in place orders I found myself without concerts, gigs, or rehearsals. Because of social distancing I ended up exploring solo repertoire, and was able to rediscover the magic of Telemann’s solo Fantasias for flute. This collection has been described by George Caird as the 'wind players’ answers to the Bach cello suites, they are musical gems, technical gymnasiums, tonal guides and imaginative playgrounds.' I feel Fantasia No. 4 evokes feelings of nature, solitude and inner reflection – feelings I became quite acquainted with during this past year of isolation. I tried to capture this sense of inner contemplation in the video." |
Michael Andrew & Big Band: I Got Rhythm
Michael Andrew: "Like all Gershwin hits, this is a special song. Introduced by Ethel Merman in 1930, it has been reinterpreted by so many since then. We tried to do something a little different, but still stay true to the spirit of the original style of this great tune. I like to think George and Ira would approve. I thought it would be great to feature David Rokeach’s groovy drumming and this arrangement created for me by Brian Snapp showcases David’s tasteful stylings as he drives the swingin’ big band. If I have a band like this behind me then, yes, I got rhythm and I got music." |
Sass N Harmony: Siren's Burlesque
Witchy femme folk interweaving three-part harmony and frolics through the woods, to the cosmos and back through the heart. Featuring Carolyn Herlehy, cajon & vocals; Maisha Lani, vocals & marimba; Ariel Wang, violin; Lewis Patzner, cello; and Heather Normandale, ukulele & vocals. |
The Baritonettes: God Only Knows
From arranger Kateřina Pavlíková: "The current sad state of lockdown and isolation has created the need to connect, at least on a virtual level, with people who are in the same mood. The idea of reaching out to other women around the world who share the same passion and that is a unique musical instrument—a baritone saxophone, originated last year, but only thanks to the Music In Place organization I had the opportunity to realize it." Personnel: Pavlíková, Isabella Fabbri, Jovana Joka, Karen Barreto, and Sofía Zumbado Castro, baritone saxophones. |
John Worley and the Mo-Chi Ensemble — Winds of Change/Last Tango in Delano
From John L. Worley, Jr., and his Mo-Chi Ensemble (“Mo” = more, and “Chi” = vital energy from within). Says John: "This project is composed of two parts. The opening fanfare, 'Winds of Change,' is dedicated to President Barack Obama, and is reminiscent of hope and the desire to bring positive change to our nation. 'Last Tango in Delano' is dedicated to the memory of my father, John L. Worley, who as a SIU member served as a bodyguard for Cesar Chavez and marched with the farm workers in Delano, hence the title." |
English Folk Song Suite — Three-Fifths Quintet w. Stan Muncy
Composed in 1923 by Ralph Vaughan Williams, this piece is built around traditional melodies transcribed from field recordings of folk singers from various regions of England. With Dan Gianola-Norris, trumpet; Cathleen Torres, horn; Rich Lee, bass trombone and tuba; Stan Muncy, percussion. Arranged by Jari Villanueva. |
Nanti Glo — John Stowell
Please sit back and let yourself be transported by this swinging and evocative tune from guitarist John Stowell and his group. Says John: "For this project, I thought if would be fun to use a two guitar/bass/drums format for one of my original tunes. Rick Vandivier (electric guitar), Dan Robbins (bass) and Jason Lewis (drums) are all good friends and stellar musicians. They interpreted my tune 'Nanti Glo' beautifully. I’m happy that we could collaborate virtually and look forward to playing with Rick, Dan and Jason live again soon." |
Quartet San Francisco — Ives Been Thinking About You
For our 55th music video project, we present Quartet San Francisco's nostalgic homage to the city by the Bay. Jeremy Cohen's composition is a Barbary Coast bluegrass blowout with strains of familiar folk melodies which still continue to echo through the city today. With Jeremy Cohen, violin; Joseph Christianson, violin; Chad Kaltinger, viola; and Andrés Vera, cello. Maddy Delore, director and video editing; Michael Hatfield, audio editing; Brendan West, videography. |
Mascabeza con Jones — Connor Norte
'Connor Norte,' dedicated to bandleader Patrick Morehead's 1-year old son Connor, is Morehead's newest composition and is a unique blend of an Afro Peruvian 12/8 festejo meets jazz. This song is a one of a kind and Morehead hopes "that Music In Place can help get this project of Lima/Oakland out into the community of music lovers." With Patrick ‘Mascabeza’ Morehead, Keys; Josh Jones, Drums; Juan Medrano Cotito, Cajon and percussion; Geoff Brennan, Bass; and Chloe Scott, Flute. Engineered by Jeffrey Kolhede. |
Zēlos Quartet — Singlée: Mvt. 1 from Quartet for Saxophones, Op. 53
The Zēlos Quartet presents the opening movement from Jean-Baptiste Singelée's (1812-1875) pioneering work, "Premier Quatour" (1857), which was written at the request of the instrument's inventor, Adolphe Sax, who wanted to display the warm and expressive qualities of his new family of instruments to composers and manufacturers alike. Singelée delivered a piece which would kickstart a completely new chamber ensemble medium. With David Cortez, soprano saxophone; Robin Lacey, alto saxophone; Julian Salazar, tenor saxophone; and Shoko Nagami, baritone saxophone. |
Bells Atlas — Belly
Bells Atlas is a psychedelic R&B band from Oakland, California. Their thoughtful, textured sound has consistently answered the call for something new and refreshing. Bells Atlas has shared the stage with Hiatus Kaiyote, Badbadnotgood, Meshell Ndegeocello, Bermuda Triangle, and tours with NPR’s Snap Judgement. Band members Sandra Lawson-Ndu, Douglas Stuart, Geneva Harrison, Derek Barber, and Steven Blum carve through musical genres to create their own stylings—and the result is a buoyant, soulful sound that is unique yet accessible. |
Steffen Kuehn — Ruff Times
"Ruff Times" is a touching personal tribute from Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Steffen Kuehn. As he says: "I wrote this piece in memory of my dear friend Jonathan Ruff, who passed away in early October 2020. The same week I went on a writing sabbatical in Lake Tahoe for two weeks—this composition came to me three days after Jon’s funeral and I know that it contains Jon’s spirit and love for music." With Kuehn, trumpet, flugelhorn, programming; JD Walter, vocals and lyrics; Stefan Polzer, bass; Taylor Eigsti, piano/keyboard; and Antonio Sanchez, drums. |
Ed Johnson & Novo Tempo — New Day Rising
“New Day Rising” came out of a need for a return of love and hope to change the toxic negativity and darkness that has been so prevalent over the past few years. Dealing with the effects of the pandemic and recent election has made us feel even more inspired to share this song with the public and give everyone’s spirits a lift. With Ed Johnson: Acoustic Guitar and Vocal; Kristen Strom: Tenor saxophone, vocal; John Worley: Trumpet; Scott Sorkin: Electric Guitar; Jason Lewis: Drums; Jennifer Scott: piano, vocal; and René Worst: bass. |
Rob Reich & The Circus Bella All-Star Band — Levitating Gravity
Rob Reich is the musical director of Circus Bella, a homegrown independent circus that has been performing all over the Bay Area since 2008. Rob's composition “Levitating Gravity” was written to accompany the act of slackrope artist Esther de Monteflores. The melody floats and jumps playfully over the wobbly rhythm, inspired by Esther's carefree disregard for the laws of physics. With Rob Reich, keyboard; Ian Carey, trumpet; Kasey Knudsen, alto saxophone; Alisa Rose, violin; Jonathan Seiberlich, tuba; Michael Pinkham, drums; and Esther de Monteflores, slackrope. |
Kimberlye Gold — Who We Are Now
“Who We Are Now” is the first song singer/songwriter Kimberlye Gold wrote at the start of the 2020 pandemic, a way to combat feelings of loss, fear, confusion and powerlessness and transform them into a poignant love song, filled with hope and the promise of better days to come. With Kimberlye Gold, Lead vocal & rhythm guitar; Rich Armstrong, trumpet, flugelhorn, bass, percussion, & background vocals; and Dave Shul, lead guitar. Audio mixing by Jimmy Goings. Video editing by Matt Montgomery. |
Simas & Anderle — Les Goûts-réunis
The bass clarinet is a relative late-comer among traditional musical instruments; with its rich and sonorous tone color, it is rewarding to explore this Baroque music—originally written for cello—which creates many opportunities to expand the instrument's solo repertoire. These lovely dance suites capture the humor, grace, and vocal qualities capable with the bass clarinet. Jerry Simas & Jeffrey Anderle, bass clarinets; video edited by Brendan West. |
Montango — Libertango
Argentina. Tango. Two words that immediately bring to mind passion, intensity, and Astor Piazzolla. Please enjoy this special production from Music In Place — "Libertango," one of the hallmark compositions of Piazzolla. Featuring the powerhouse father, son, daughter triumvirate ensemble "Montango" comprised of Vanessa Bloom, Matt Montgomery, and Tom Montgomery, rounded out with bassist Jonny Keigwin. Super Soul Bros. — Studiopolis Zone Act 1 (Sonic Mania)
Super Soul Bros. is what happens when you jam a James Brown record into a Super Nintendo. The San Jose-based collective aims to combine the explosive and off the cuff energy of fusion jazz with the nostalgia of classic game OSTs. This time they've chosen to perform the theme from Sonic Mania's Studiopolis Zone Act 1. Composed by Tiago "Tee" Lopes; arranged by Alex Popoff. |

Noah Frank & Sueños — Roy
Sueños is a San Francisco-based band that strives to blend jazz with modern styles like hip-hop and indie rock. Their song "Roy" is a tribute to the late, great trumpeter Roy Hargrove. In a departure from our usual, more "polished" productions, this video was captured during one of Sueños' regular busking performances in Golden Gate Park. With Noah Frank, Trumpet; Eli Maliwan, Tenor Sax; Kai Lyons, Guitar; Curtis Aikens, Bass; and Brandon Farmer, Drums. |
Mason Razavi — Blue and Grey Waltz
"Blue and Grey Waltz" is a gentle but driving tune that moves between two modes ("blue" and "grey"). A modal composition, the tune affords the improvisors ample space and freedom to tell a story while challenging them to weave together two disparate keys. With Mason Razavi, guitar; Tim Lin, tenor saxophone; Dahveed Behroozi, piano; Tom Langan, bass; Jason Lewis, drums; and Oscar Pangilinan, soprano saxophone. |

“STRONG” is a moment in time from a group of San Francisco musicians who have spent their lives creating and performing together. They are sheltering in place in their homes during the pandemic and the tragedy of the George Floyd protests. The concerts and gigs are gone for now. This diverse group needs to make music just like people need food. “The world is going CRAZY!”, says Titos Sompa.
